Environmental and Human Health Risks of Lead Accumulation in Soil Samples from Solid Waste Dumpsites within Abuja, Nigeria

چکیده
The environmental risks associated with heavy metal pollutions are becoming worrisome. Hence, this study evaluated the and human health of lead (Pb) accumulation in soil samples from solid waste dumpsites within Abuja, Nigeria. Soil (n=72) were collected (0-45 cm depth) Abaji, Bwari, Gosa, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali 2 km away (control), then analyzed for Pb using atomic absorption spectrophotometer. contaminations soils individuals (Children Adults) via inhalation dermal contacts ecological risk equations. concentrations below permissible limits set by protection agencies highest Kuje dumpsite lowest Abaji dumpsite. pollution indices ranged ‘low risks’ (at Gwagwalada dumpsites) to ‘very contamination dumpsites). Daily dose contact pathways higher no significant lifetime (non-carcer cancer) observed suggesting that routes pose very low poisoning both children (≤ 15 years) adults 70 years). This suggests concentration might cause more than hazards exposed pathways.

Heavy Metals Pollution at Municipal Solid Waste Dumpsites in Kano and Kaduna States in Nigeria
Soil samples collected from two major dumpsites each in Kano and Kaduna states were investigated for heavy metals pollution. Each of the dumpsite was divided into north, south, east and west. Four soil samples were collected at a depth of 0-15 cm from each part and pooled to form a composite sample. Soil samples from reserve areas within the same geographical locations as the dumpsites were col...
متن کاملNitrogen Mineralization in Selected Solid Waste Dumpsites in Port Harcourt, Nigeria
Organic wastes in selected waste dumpsites in Port Harcourt were successively incubated with sandy-loam soils for days at 27oC, under aerobic conditions. The results showed marked decrease in total nitrogen in the organic wastes which was observed as loss of nitrogen. The process of nitrification and incorporation of (NH4)2SO4 affected the pH which ranged from 5.9 to 7.9. The cumulative mineral...

The study was designed to assess the environmental and health risks arising from intensive poultry production in Kwara State, Nigeria. A total of 120 poultry farmers in Kwara State under the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) were selected randomly for the study, and structured questionnaires were administered. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square test, an...
متن کاملHealth Challenges of Human Resources in Municipal Solid Waste Management
In most classic texts, solid waste management is considered to be consisting of some certain functional elements, including generation, storage, segregation, recycling, transportation and disposal. However implying, this feature does not directly incorporate or emphasize human resources that are supposed to be the center of any sustainable development. It might be due to the noticeable fact o...
متن کاملAssessment of Occupational and Environmental Health and Safety Risks in Solid Waste Systems
In the first phase of this study, the work has focused on the collection of data exploiting the state of existing knowledge. Review of literature on occupational and environmental exposures and related health outcomes in solid waste management systems is conducted. Reports are collected from several reliable sources at the national, state, and local levels from both public and private utilities...
